WHAT IS HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING?

High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of exercise that consists of alternating bouts of intense activity followed by recovery periods. According to the article by William L. Haskell, et. al, in order to maintain health, people need at least 30 mins of activity performed 5 days a week for a total of 150 min/week. HIIT allows you to reach the recommended guidelines in a fraction of that time. With HIIT, you cut down the time from 150 mins/week to 75min/week (Nagle, Sanders, Franklin, 2015, p. 64). Those 75 minutes can be broken down into small, quick workouts which makes it easy to fit workouts into practically every schedule. In addition to time, there are many other benefits such as building a healthier heart, weight loss, and more.
Whatever your fitness level is or the type of activity that you enjoy, you can find a HIIT program that fits you!
